At the formal request of the Bishop of Aizwal, Stephen Rotluanga CSC, to the Regional Superior of Kohima, Fr. Arul Susaimanickam to start an institution of higher learning at Aizwal, in the state of Mizoram and consequently, Fr. Arul who for various reasons could not undertake the project on his own, forwarded the request to the Darjeeling province. Soon, the Darjeeling province Jesuits made two official trips to Mizoram to understand the needs and the challenges faced by the diocese and also to explore the possibility of setting up a higher learning institute.
Despite the state being a Christian one with almost a hundred percent Christian population, there is considerably a small population of only around 20,000 Catholics in the State, which is dominated by the Presbyterians. Hence, it was felt that a Catholic College was a necessity to impart the Catholic faith and values to the people of Aizwal, in the state of Mizoram. In the meantime, it was also felt that the higher educational institution was necessary to form future leaders of the state and also to cater to people belonging to middle and lower middle class background who are economically backward.
The Bishop of Aizwal, made arrangements to provide the Darjeeling province with 26 acres of land at the cost of INR 1,500,000.00 (EUR 21,000.00), for the establishment of the campus. The land is ample enough for the construction of the campus and for further expansion and development of infrastructural facilities. The construction work began in October 2016. Despite the very many challenges especially the one to transport construction material to the site, the college building was partially completed in July 2017. The inauguration took place the same month and the classes officially began in August 2017. The campus caters to the Mizos who come from various tribal origins engaged mostly in farming.
